2014 VOLUNTEERS
2013 VOLUNTEERS
One of the things that make us really grateful to be doing what we are doing is that when our volunteers come to help, they often include special needs children to help them give back and to see how great of a return they receive by doing things for others. HOW VERY BLESSED WE ARE!!
We were fortunate to have Girl Scout Troop 259 from Ontario, to volunteer so the girls could earn their bonze award. They decided to create a "book nook" in our bay window area. We will be posting some pictures. It is unbelievable what talent the girls have. But, that was not the end of what they wanted to do
They decided they wanted to spread the word about Sugar's Acres so they held and hosted a open house.
Laurie Gilbert, leader and her very skilled troop did just that. We want to thank you for bringing so much love and excitement to Sugar's Acres today! You brought so many wonderful children and their family's into our lives. There is nothing better than to see a child smile, loving God's wonderful gifts of nature and so happy to be here. How fortunate we are to have you and everyone we met today a part of our lives.
WEEK OF HOPE -2013
Our first
group for the summer was from PA, Ohio, MA and NY. Their fabulous leader was representing First Presbyterian Church in
Youngstown, NY. This was the first time
she had met these youngsters and what an example she set. She worked individually with each one of them
and really got to know their capabilities.
They worked from June 24th – 27th helping to clear the “poison ivy” area, pond,
trails, trimming trees, weeding and everything else that needed to be
done. THANKS TO: Carla
Mackenna, Leader, Amy Warner, Branson Reigart, East Berlin, PA; Matthew
Emelhiser, Watrville, Ohio; Sarah
Gustafson, Monsoa, MA; and Mackensie
Robie
Our next group was from Chodae Community Church in
Norwood, NJ. They were here from July 9th to 11th. What a group of hard workers!! They cut
brush, cleaned and lined trails, reinforced “Connor’s Cove” fence, set post for
the dog kennel, etc.etc…
THANKS TO: Rev. David & Sunny Seo, Leaders; Vivian
Lee. Joonho Jo, Justin Choi, Noa Kin, Michelle Lee & Young Lee, Emily
Huvang, and Stephanie Choi.
On July 22nd to 25th we were
honored to have the Jerusalem
Lutheran Church in Westminster, MD offer their help. We also had a Pastor Matt and his helper Luke
Cross from Gettysburg, PA with this
group . Pastor Matt forgot to sign our book so we do not have his church
name. Talk about workers, this group
cleared woods, trimmed trees, loaded and dumped the truck so many times we lost
count, they learned to drive the
tractor, cut fields, and the pastor and
his wife, Norman & Melissa Smith worked on our rock and special tree area,
clearing ivy and weeds etc.
THANKS TO: Rev. Norman,
Melissa and son Lucas Smith; Jason Morris; Tucker Corey, Ryan & Tyler
Dunford, and Pastor Matt and Luke Cross.
NOTE TO ALL
VOLUNTEERS: Thank you for all
your help, as you know, you have a special invitation to visit, camp, fish and
play anytime you want at Sugar’s Acres..
We hope you will take us up on this.
You are the ones that make us what we are today!! Thanks AGAIN……
2012 VOLUNTEERS
Thanks to Wayne County Fingerlakes Boces of Williamson Criminal Justice
Department and Juniors and Seniors who helped clear wooded areas, loaded the truck and then unloaded all the branches at the town maintenance yard. .We would like to acknowledge Karen Dell, teacher, Tracy Kaper, teacher assistant and their caring students for all their work. We look forward to seeing them again this fall.
We want to congratulate Jonathan Reed on earning his Eagle Scout Badge.
Jon developed and completed a plan to build and install 3 benches and 3
fire pits on the grounds. Thanks to Palmyra Troop 96, Melissa Schoonmaker, Terri Goodman, Joe Goodman from Waterloo Troop #74 St. Paul's Episcopal Church. Shawn Hubecker, as well as Jon's family and friends who all helped. In addition, they surprised us by putting in a drainage system so a flowing creek on the property would flow into the pond. Even though it was raining a lot of the time, they worked right through. Some of them camped for the weekend with us and we enjoyed a visit with them at their camp fire. We would also like to thank Mark Mein, Eagle Scout Advisor who worked with Jon on this project and has helped us in the past with various projects at Sugars Acres of Love.
Week of Hope Volunteers
Each week starting with June 18th there were youth Christian work camps and their leaders that came from surrounding states that would spend approximately 5 hours per day Monday thru Thursday.
Some of the many projects they worked on were clearing trees, limbs, brush and leaves from the woods; cleaning saw grass and seaweed from the pond; mulching around the gardens, trees and trails, planting trees and scrubs, landscaping, designing and building a meditating area and naming the tree.
The inspiration, enthusiasm, happiness and love they showed at being able to help us with these projects was overwhelming and heartwarming to know what wonderful caring youth we have in this country to build our future generations. May God bless and keep you all in His loving care.
June 18th - June 21st This Ministry was from First United Methodist Church of Blackshear, Georgia. All twelve of them arrived on their bus ready to work cutting down trees, clearing the woods, planting trees, scrubs, working in the gardens, making up planters, cleaning the pond, mowing lawns, weed whacking etc.... We were fortunate to have someone who could operate our large John Deere tractor. On the last day we had one LARGE BON FIRE. (See Pictures} We were fortunate to have a photographer, Dr Howard M Koft, owner of Photophoria, here that day.

July 2nd - 3rd This ministry was from the Elevation Student Ministries, Potomac Heights Baptist Church, Indianhead Maryland. One gigantic bus carried all 23 of them from Maryland to Sugar's Acres where they raked, weed whacked, worked on trails, put stones on our second driveway. planted flower beds, loaded and unloaded the truck, etc... A couple of weeks back our big tractor started leaking hydraulic fluid and we had to put it out of commission while we waited for a estimate of repair. John Burns, one of the leaders looked at it and said "I can fix that". Mike Hackelton, another leader worked on our chain saws and was able to fix them. They also had a young volunteer named Connor who was touched by a benefit we recently held to honor a young boy named Conner, who lost his battle to cancer last year and we have a area that we want to develop called "Conners Cove", in his honor. Connor went back to camp that night and draw up a plan as well as a plaque to place in the cove. Mike used the change saw to cut the rails so Conner and the group could work on the rail fence. (See pictures) We plan on implementing his plan. God works in such mysterious ways. He always knows what we need. Time and time again, he sends the right people to us.
